Can I Drink Pu-erh Tea at Night?

Pu-erh tea is mild in nature and offers health benefits, improper consumption can cause insomnia. To avoid insomnia from drinking Pu-erh tea, we should learn to drink it properly. The higher tea polyphenols in raw Pu-erh tea may cause insomnia, so it’s best not to drink tea two hours before bedtime, especially new tea.

Fresh tea is too stimulating, and drinking new Pu-erh tea can make you excited and affect your sleep. Ripe (cooked) Pu-erh tea undergoes fermentation and maturation through a process called "wet piling," which transforms the tea polyphenols.

This "maturing" process reduces the tea's stimulating effects, making it milder and less likely to cause insomnia. If you prefer to drink cooked Pu-erh tea, it is best to choose tea that has been aged for 5-10 years.

A 2019 study showed that GABA and theanine, when combined, can promote sleep and extend its duration. However, it's important to note that caffeine's presence may counteract these compounds' effects, especially if one drinks the tea shortly before bedtime.

Can I Drink Pu-erh Tea Every Day?

It is advisable to drink no more than 400 ml of Pu-erh tea per day. Exceeding this amount significantly can lead to "tea intoxication," characterized by light dizziness and euphoria. You can brew one batch of tea several times, typically 5-7 times. First, fill the brew with water to cover the tea particles, and then drain it. This rinses the Pu-erh tea of dust and allows it to unfold, especially if it is pressed Shu or Sheng. Infuse the first spills for 5 seconds, gradually increasing the soaking time to no more than a minute.

Avoid drinking Pu-erh tea on an empty stomach, as it can cause heartburn and stomach discomfort due to its high acidity. Instead, make tea about 30 minutes after a meal. Drink it without sugar to preserve its original flavour and maximize its benefits.

How Long Can Pu-erh Tea Be Stored?

To preserve Pu-erh tea, store it in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight. Use breathable containers like clay jars, bamboo wrappers, or paper boxes to allow airflow. Maintain a stable temperature and avoid rapid changes to protect the tea's integrity. Ensure moderate humidity, around 60-70%, to prevent mould while keeping the tea from becoming too dry. Proper storage will enhance the aging process and improve the tea's flavour over time.
